How to Play Taboo
The forbidden word game (taboo) is an interesting word guessing game to develop students’ language skills. The goal is for students to be able to guess the keyword but not use forbidden words (words that have the closest relationship to the keyword).
For example, students must guess the keyword “TATOO” but the hinter must not give suggestions containing forbidden words such as “SKIN, INK, PERMANENT, PARLOUR, REMOVAL”.
Before the lesson, teachers need to write key words and forbidden words on cards as above.
Video tutorial on how to play the game
How to play:
– Divide students into groups: each group has at least 2 members
– Each team needs a set of cards that contain keywords and forbidden words
– Teachers can laminate plastic to reuse in future lessons
– The cards are cut out, then shuffled and placed face down
– One member of the team takes the first card and does not let his teammates know. Your task will be to describe the keyword (eg TATOO) at the beginning of the tag without using forbidden words below. Teammates must guess what the keyword is. Participants are not allowed to spell, use foreign languages or slang, and are not allowed to use gestures, sounds or drawings.
– If that person uses one of the taboo words, that team will lose points, points will be added to the opposite team. – Each person is allowed two minutes to describe as many words as possible to the opposite team.
– For each correctly guessed word, the team will receive one point. This activity is designed to develop students’ expression skills, while expanding their vocabulary, as well as practicing how to explain clearly. problem/concept clearly and coherently.
Tips
For classes with low proficiency and not enough level to express coherently, forbidden words (taboo) will become suggested words for students to express so that their teammates can guess the word.
Note: After being guessed, words must be taught pronunciation and provided with meaning.
